Ellen Craft (1826 - 1897) Ellen Craft was born a slave in Georgia and lived in Macon. She escaped from slavery to the northern US with her husband William through the Underground Railroad. Ellen was literate and very light-skinned, so she disguised herself as a white man, while her husband pretended to be her slave. The couple moved to England after the Fugitive Slave Law enabled slave hunters to pursue them even in free states. Her husband wrote
