New Years card
This British 'Hearts are trumps' New Year card, now considered objectionably racist, was made as part of Pear's Soap advertising and publicity material and dates from the early 20th century. The British tradition that tall dark strangers bring luck at New Year meant that many people of African descent were cast in this stereotyped role.
