Activity Case study of West African Kingdoms

Themes this can be used for:

West African History

Show pupils the selected objects and explain that African wealth was largely founded on trading in gold.

Ask pupils individually or in pairs to build up a case study of either the kingdom of Benin or the Asante.

Provide initial information to get pupils started and then encourage them to research the kingdom they choose further online at BBC's Story of Africa.

Pupils should present their findings as a series of answers to questions such as:

  • When was this kingdom at its height?
  • What features characterized it culturally?
  • What part of Africa did it occupy and what is that region called today?

Differentiation
Make it easier by providing more background information as handouts and giving pupils tables to fill in or worksheets to complete.
