Abolition

Watch an actor read the words of Thomas Buxton, making a speech on slavery in the House of Commons on 15 May 1823.

In this short extract from the speech Buxton describes how slaves have to see the mothers of their children stripped and whipped. He also talks about how families were separated, children sold at market. He describes the self perception of the enslaved as being simply a thing, a machine to produce sugar or a beast of burden. Buxton was actively seeking to end slavery, not just the slave trade through the Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery.
