Runaway slaves

Activity 1 of 2

Show students the 'Runaway Jack' notice and the
'$150 reward' poster. Brainstorm all the factors that would motivate slaves to try to escape, building on the hardships covered in Slavery activities. Introduce key vocabulary: resistance, rebellion, culture and freedom.

Play the video extract 'Frederick Douglass' about his escape from slavery. Talk to students about the different ways slaves could demonstrate their rejection of slavery and antipathy towards their owners: by uprisings and rebellions and subverting the working on the plantations, as well as showing resistance by retaining aspects of their own culture and identity.
