Read the relevant section in Themes before teaching this topic
Students will:
Learn that Britain ended the slave trade in 1807, but this act alone did not end slavery.
Be able to recognise the different meanings of the terms slavery, emancipation, apprenticeship and indentured labour.
Appreciate the complex process taken from abolition in 1807 to emancipation in 1838 and how events would have affected different individuals in this period of history.
Reflect on how emancipation is, or should be commemorated.
