Triangular Trade | |||
In the 18th century people did not buy sugar as granules or lumps as we do today. It was poured into conical moulds, where it crystallized into sugar loaves like this one, before being wrapped in paper (dyed purple with the indigo exported along with slaves from Africa). Sugar nippers were used for cutting off small pieces of sugar in the kitchen or at the tea table. This sugar loaf is 255 mm high.
