The use of the abolitionist logo of a chained, kneeling slave shown pleading to Europeans to give him his freedom was widely encouraged. The image suited the religious and moral campaign of the white abolitionists in generating sympathy and support for the downtrodden, rather than creating a climate of equality for all. Here the logo is used on a lockable iron box, possibly for tobacco.
