This print of a "Female Negro Slave, With A Weight chained to her Ankle" is from J.G. Steadman's Narrative of a Five year Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam, 1772 - 1777. The account and accompanying illustrations showed what happened to captured rebels in the Dutch colony of Surinam in South America. It describes the brutal repression of a major rebellion by the enslaved against inhumane conditions, including the punishments and restraints illustrated in this image.
